Developing Capable Young People

Positive Discipline is a program designed to teach young people to become responsible, resourceful members of their communities. Based on the best selling “Positive Discipline” books by Jane Nelsen and others, it promotes self-discipline: doing the right thing when no one is watching, forcing, or bribing. This happens when we model and teach our children important social and life skills in a manner that is deeply respectful and encouraging for both children and adults. Positive Discipline teaches adults to employ kindness and firmness at the same time, and is neither punitive nor permissive.

DEVELOPMENTALLY  APPROPRIATE

Positive Discipline is for everyone! It is a sustainable parenting method, meaning it is applicable to children of any age, from birth through the teenage years. Because of its focus on respect, communication, and solutions, you will find many of the tools and concepts to be applicable to adult relationships as well.

How is it different?

From other parenting programs? Many other parenting programs focus only on the behavior (for tantrums do this; for whining do that). Even “positive” parenting methods often employ punishment (sometimes disguised as “consequences”) in an attempt to modify behavior. Positive Discipline addresses the belief behind the behavior, and eliminates all punishment and rewards in favor of encouragement. The primary goal of all children is to belong and feel significant. Positive Discipline helps us guide our children toward belonging and significance in ways that are supportive and constructive.

HERE’S JUST SOME OF WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  • You will learn that ultimately you are NOT ALONE  and that together we can work towards being the best (not perfect) adult in our children's lives.  These classes can be so validating when we hear how others struggle with similar challenges. That common humanity alone can give us fuel to persevere!
  • You will learn the core principles that underlies Positive Discipline - how to meet the REAL NEED that helps children to develop into responsible, respectful, resourceful, and happy young people that know how capable they are.
  • You will leave with simple and effective Positive Discipline tools that you can begin utilizing right away and practical implementation with your child's individual needs!  These principles and tools can be used preventatively and as empowering interventions.

Workshops are taught by Shiloh Martin, LPC
